CELL HISTORY

Meaning of Cell
Cell is the basic unit of life. It is the fundamental unit of life.

Forms In Which They Exist
Cells exist as:
1. Single and free living organism e.g amoeba, euglena, paramecium

2. As a colony e.g volvox,

3. As a filament e.g spirogyra, oscillateria

4. As part of living organisms

CELL AND CELL THEORY

Cells were first discovered and described by Roobert Hooke in 1965. Cell theory was proposed by Mathias Schleiden and Theodor, Schwann as a result of their discoveries on plant and animal cells respectively. The theory states that the cell:

1. Is the structural unit of all living things;
2. Is the functional unit of life;
3. Originates from pre-existing cell; and
4. Contains hereditary materials
While the last one which is sometimes included is that:
There is no life apart from the life of cell.

CELL STRUCTURES
There are two types of cells.They are plant and animals cells. They are shown below

A. PLANT CELL STRUCTURE                                             B. ANIMAL CELL STRUCTURE

 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PLANT CELLS AND ANIMAL CELLS
PLANT CELL                                                                                   ANIMAL CELL
There is cellulose cell wall                                                        No cellulose cell wall
Definite shape                                                                         No definite shape
There is chlorophyll                                                                  No chlorophyll

cell discovery
 cell was discovered by  Robert Hooke in the year 1665 with aid of the microscope produced by Anthony van Leeuwenhoek .

Felix Dujardin ; he discovered the living part of the cell known as PROTOPLASM in the year 1835

Matthias Schledien; he discovered that cell were present in plant in the year 1838
theodore schwaan; he discovered that cell were present in animal in the year 1839
Rudolf van Virchow; he postulated that all cell come from the pre-existing ones
